Report on Bhutan v Oman ACC Trophy Challenge 2009 – Group A

Oman lived upto their billing as pre-tournament favourites by completing a convincing eight-wicket victory over Bhutan at Prem Centre in the opening match in Group A of the ACC Trophy Challenge 2009.

Oman are using this competition as preparation for the qualifying tournament for the 2011 World Cup and were far too powerful for Bhutan with both bat and ball after they had asked Bhutan to bat first.

Swinging the ball at a lively pace, Farhan Khan took three early wickets to reduce Bhutan to 34 for five. Thinley Jamtsho top-scored with a determined 38 from 69 balls with five fours, but Awal Khan, bowling medium-pace seamers, and Hemal Mehta, bowling slow left-arm, also claimed three wickets each to dismiss Bhutan for a total of 111 in 33.4 overs.

Oman started their reply in explosive fashion, as Maqsood Hussain hit 18 from six balls with three fours and a six, and although Adnan Ilyas started more slowly he reached fifty in just 35 balls with six fours and three sixes.

Oman needed only 13.1 overs to reach their target of 113 with two wickets down to complete an eight-wicket victory which showed they must be considered the strongest team in the competition.

Bhutan 111 (33.4 overs) (Thinley Jamtsho 38; Farhan Khan 3-19, Hemal Mehta 3-21, Awal Khan 3-26)

Oman 112-2 (13.1 overs) (Adnan Ilyas 50, Vaibhav Wategaonkar 26*)

Oman won by 8 wickets

Man of the Match: Awal Khan(Oman)
